You Need To Watch This

Enlightened is an exceptional dark comedy series that needs to be seen but no one is watching

I first heard of Enlightened when Molly Shannon (of Superstar/SNL fame, obviously) went on a media blitz promoting the show this month. Seriously, she was everywhere. She said, with confidence, Enlightened was 'the best show' on air. For anyone who's aware of the number of exceptional shows on T.V. right now, this is a large claim that is probably false but if Molly Shannon says so, then it must be true. So I watched it.

Enlightened is an exceptional dark comedy series that needs to be seen but no one is watching. Its first season premiered to only 200 000 something viewers and continued to become one of the lowest rated series in HBO.  Thankfully, HBO's subscription format - vs. ad revenue - gives a chance to creative and experimental shows worth watching. The critics spoke and HBO listened (and "feels strongly about it"), Enlightened was renewed.

Not only is the show an underdog, but the show itself is about the underdog.

Enlightened is everything. It''s funny, sad, confusing, and full, full, full of wisdom.

Not only is the show an underdog, but the show itself is about the underdog. It follows the story of Amy, a fresh-off-rehab who has an epiphany that her workplace is sick and she can change it after a mental breakdown that destroy all good rapport with her colleagues. In a pragmatic world, Amy's idealist sensibility is laughed off (e.g."Let me just get my poison tampon"). It's unique: it's not about an archetype like a crime investigation or a family drama. Anyone who's gone against the grain would relate to this show - which is every one - and yet no one is watching. Even with the Girls lead in.

Also, The series creator, Mike White credits include Nacho Libre, Freaks and Geeks and Dawson's Creeks so yeah.
