Met Gala 2013

Last night was the Met Gala and the red carpet was one large ritzy disappointment. Many seemed to have missed or ignored the theme of the night, PUNK: Chaos to Couture. To me, beyond the visual signifiers of mohawks, leather jackets, and studs, punk is an attitude. It's about insisting self authenticity and individuality. It's a pushing of boundaries and challenging conventions through anarchy. It's about being a trainwreck and not being best dressed damn it. The very thing being celebrated was lost in translation.

Instead, many of the attendees still looked Hollywood: refined, beautiful, glamourous, expensive. And there, is where the problem lies: it's a contradiction. Punk doesn't stand for any of these, it's the reaction to all of these. PUNK: Chaos to Couture is not a real progression, it's a punchy lie. Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, why are you even there? Taylor Swift  and Beyonce, love you both and you can try to be punk, but we all know that's not what you are fundamentally. Ultimately, the best dressed of the night not only dressed the part, but innately possess the attitude of punk.
